An American-style café and restaurant serving mainly salads and other western dishes, Applegreen’s Causeway Bay location is in the middle of the dining mecca that is Russell Street (with other branches in Tsim Sha Tsui and Mong Kok). Perhaps due to that convenient location (it’s the building opposite the MTR station in Times Square), it’s a spot that fills up quickly, whatever the time of day.
A street as quiet and as quaint as Jordan’s Tak Shing deserves an eatery to match its surroundings, and this cute brunch mainstay fits the bill. They first opened in January, and when we finally found a free morning to swing by (they’re closed on Sundays, which is disappointing) we were charmed by the simple blue-and-white interior and minimalist wall hangings.
Filling the footsteps of previous establishment Opia at the JIA Boutique Hotel, The Drawing Room provides an elegant, tasteful interior that exudes plush comfort. Modeling itself on the concept of the classic drawing room, it’s the perfect place to chill out and relax, while alternatively, private dining options allow you to secure the whole restaurant for large-scale events. The restaurant has one of the city’s finest Italian chefs, Roland Schuller (of former Aspasia fame), so prepare for an unbelievable dining experience.
Su Casa is one of those private kitchen-like establishments on an upper floor somewhere, serving oysters and western-style dishes but with very local servers and a very local clientele. Here, you ring a doorbell in front of a big black door in a nondescript building, and are welcomed into a small, dark room with pale magenta curtains covering most of the windows. (It’s definitely not a place for the claustrophobic.)
Rather than loading you up with fatty fries and other greasy treats, Getgo offers food court patrons light and healthy options like turkey paninis and banana smoothies.

For years we’ve gazed across the harbor longing for the patties at the American burger/shake/ fries joint BLT Burger. But the impossibly long queue frightens us away every time we venture over.
Luckily, they opened a second burger spot in Times Square early last year and we’ve been in love ever since. If you’re an Island-dweller you’ll be happy to know that there’s never a line at this location, and even happier knowing that the food just as awesome.
After spending an afternoon hiking around Lamma, we returned to the Yung Shue Wan waterfront absolutely ravenous. Pretty much limited to the one strip of restaurants, we went for B&B (it stands for “Beer & Babble”, if anyone’s curious) after noticing a comfortable-sized crowd of people sitting down for dinner.
We were lucky enough to snag an outdoor seat, and while we weren’t sitting right next to the waterfront we still had a lovely view of the water—radically different and much more peaceful than Victoria Harbor, for sure.
With the array of cafes and Western food options in Sheung Wan nowadays, you would think it’d be relatively easy to find a decent North American-style sandwich shop. Fortunately for those looking to grab a quick meaty bite but not in the mood for a health-conscious hangout in the Tai Ping Shan and Po Hing Fong area, the popular sandwich chain Hero has a third Hong Kong location near Fitness First on Queen’s Road Central.
SYP’s dining scene is really taking off, and when an American diner with a neighborhood vibe opened up along the new Centre Street escalators (between High Street and Bonham Road), we were excited and extremely curious. Would diner food please the Hong Kong palate? Evidently it can, as every time we go, the friendly little restaurant has at least one person seated at a high top facing the window and two tables full of people enjoying a wide selection of home-style dishes.
Awakening Café aims to be your neighborhood American style café providing traditional home style dishes such as baby back ribs, burgers, smoked rib-eye steaks and chili cheese fries. After opening in December last year, Awakening Café has become popular amongst the brunch crowd on weekends serving up their signature chicken fried steak and French toast served with fresh fruit. Along with the promise of no service charge, Awakening Café serves unlimited refills of Iced Lemon Tea and bottomless coffee.
