Conveniently located in Mong Kok, Maia’s Box Bakery offers freshly-made artisanal creations that are artificial flavor- and chemical-free. Worth a mention are its onion, ham, mozarella cheese and tea-flavored breads. It also showcases a selection of cakes and cookies, and even creates baked goods for dogs.

Honestly, we were expecting something more local and colorful in a district like Mong Kok, and were surprised by the generous gaps between each table and the understated colors of the whole interior. Lots of white, and lots of light, bright furniture.

If you’d prefer to unwind under sunny skies with the option to cool off at a moment’s notice, Langham Place’s 20-meter pool is outdoors and located on the roof, surrounded by a deck and cabanas to provide some shade. You’ll be (literally) floating 42 stories above ground level. Swim some laps to the rhythm of their underwater audio system, step into a Jacuzzi or sit pretty in a lounge chair while enjoying your favorite cocktail, along with the spectacular views you can only get from on high.

There’s no mistaking what this company makes, and no denying the delicious richness of their products after the first bite, either. Awfully Chocolate will bake special and high quality personalized cakes on request. On whole cakes they can write short messages without charge for advance orders and will make their cupcakes extra sweet by adding initials or a short name, with a minimum order of twenty.

The buzz: With creative direction and branding management by local artist Stanley Wong, rwb330 (which stands for red-white-blue 330) takes the red, white and blue striped pattern of those ubiquitous nylon bags—oft spotted being dragged up steep hills by amahs and grannies—and gives them a new lease on life in trendy totes, backpacks and other accessories.
The aforementioned red-white-and-blue bags… and placemats, tissue box covers, and whatever other homey knick-knacks you can think of. All the wares here are great for those who look at the pattern with nostalgia, or who’re fans of the “cheap-n’-chic” phenomenon that’s been on the rise lately. Handmade products and patchwork by local designer Prudence Mak (also known as Chocolate Rain) and others are also available.
