Category IIA. Rather than just a simple remake of Jules Verne’s classic, Eric Brevig’s latest blockbuster is a snazzy postmodern take where the characters—led by Brendan Fraser’s usual bumbling and supposedly heroic self—use the novel as a roadmap while tunneling deep into the earth. The good news is that this in no way requires a familiarity with Verne’s novel, any basic scientific knowledge, or indeed any thinking at all.
