It’s oddly fitting that Robert Zemeckis should finally make a film starring Denzel Washington, because both men have shared similarly capricious career trajectories. For your consideration: they were both consistently acclaimed Hollywood royalty before turning forty, and yet, their recent filmographies display a puzzling disinterest in flaunting their sizeable talent.
(USA) Directed by Guy Ritchie. Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Noomi Rapace, Jared Harris, Rachel McAdams, Stephen Fry, Kelly Reilly. Category IIA.
The trailer: “Mrs. Henderson is a widow who is by no means going to spend the rest of her days playing bridge. The Windmill Theater becomes her game and the infamous showman Vivian Van Dam (Bob Hoskins) becomes her partner and fiercest opponent. The Germans are bombing London but the roar of the Windmill is all that can be heard...” Oh, if only it had been that simple.
A bored rich widow opens London’s first topless revue in Stephen Frears’ entertaining, but flat, Mrs. Henderson Presents.
