After the flat in-betweener that was The Girl Who Played with Fire, the final installment of Stieg Larsson’s trilogy bounces back with terrific aplomb to close out the series. Not quite as brilliant as the fast-paced whodunit that was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but still, not bad.

(France) This is almost another one of those “all art direction and nothing else” films, which, alarmingly, is becoming quite the rage these days. Almost, we say, as thankfully, a few saving graces were tossed in to save this indulgent, emotionally bereft offering from being a total...

(USA) Clash has all the ingredients of a summer blockbuster epic alright. The lead actor (Sam Worthington) can’t act to save his nuts, the script is witless, the action sequences are a mess, the CGI effects are overdone and yet, predictably, audiences are lapping it up. The only thing epic...

(USA) OK, so this does not quite pack a punch like any of Scorsese’s great gangster films. But still there is enough rough and tumble in this psychologically searing thriller to leave your head ticking over for a good while.
Dennis Lehane’s 2003 novel has been given a thoroughly good...

(USA) Written and directed by Adam Green, this gory indie flick is lean, well cast and will leave you pondering the merits of a satellite phone. But it won’t entertain you, as it’s far too grim and visceral for that. And, the ending is a bit blah...

(USA) If this is what a post-apocalyptic world is going to be like, then we’ll all die of boredom way before dehydration or roaming gangs of feral cannibals get to us. We can’t ever remember a Denzel movie this uninteresting—a threadbare plot, lightweight characters, miscast...

(USA) Not a great film this; and it would have been worse—far, far worse—had Jeff Bridges not clocked in with perhaps the best performance of his career. Comparisons with The Wrestler are apt; both feature washed-up has-beens on a comeback trail of sorts.
We fear this may be becoming a...

(USA) This is a movie for the times. No doubt about that. Crisscrossing the country gobbling up airmiles and slumming it in plush—albeit cookie-cutter—business hotels in the name of firing people? Yup … sounds like the indulgent, tragic-comic and depressive noughties alright....

(USA) Cormac McCarthy’s incredible Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the abhorrent bleakness of a post-apocalyptic world has finally been made into a movie. It—predictably—didn’t quite measure up to the former. This is the kind of film you wouldn’t go to the...

(India) Director Arup Manna pays homage to Aideu Handique, the first lady of Assamese cinema, with this stirring and, poignant portrayal of her life. In 1935 and aged 14, Aideu was cast by renowned Assamese playwright Jyotiprasad Agarwalla in his (and the language’s) first film, Joymoti. Her...
