MoonTrekker is Hong Kong’s only overnight hiking event which started in 2008, where the participants hike 26km or 40km with the aim of reaching Lantau Island’s peak--Hong Kong’s second highest mountain--before sunrise. This is Hong Kong’s fastest growing annual hiking event. After last year when over a thousand people showed interest in participating in the hike, a registration limit of 1,000 has now been established on a first come first serve basis.
This year, the race has been extended by an additional 1.5km and the new route will take participants down to Palm, on Cheung Sha Beach, where the participants will be provided with drinks, snacks, showers, and changing rooms after the race.
Starting this year, the MoonTrekker has been rebranded as Barclays MoonTrekker, as Barclays will be the title sponsor of the event for the next three years. In the last three years, the event has raised over $2 million to fund 26 projects, supporting the education of 5,900 children. Barclays MoonTrekker supports Room to Read, a global education and literacy charity organization.
The 26km course race will start at 11:20pm and the 40km course race will start at 9pm, both leaving from Mui Wo football pitch. Participants must arrive one hour in advance for registration process. Online registration for the race can be done at barclaysmoontrekker.com.
