At least until June 7, the very moment you walk into ArtisTree, a 20,000-square-foot multi-purpose space in Quarry Bay, you are immediately plunged into what feels like a dreamscape.
Creative mastermind and world-renowned DJ/composer James Lavelle brings his original concept for an art exhibition to our shores. Called “Daydreaming With…”, it first debuted in London in 2010 and has since earned plenty of media attention for its cutting-edge hybrid approach. For the Hong Kong edition, which runs from May 5 to June 7, he collaborates with fellow DJ and Hong Kong-based artist Simon Birch (who’s also his friend). Birch’s history of controversial works coupled with Lavelle’s musical expertise makes for an intriguing combination, the likes of which hasn’t yet graced the galleries on Hollywood Road.
Here are the details: Each work is created by a local or international artist and has a unique story behind it—though all are inspired, in some way, by James Lavelle’s music. Browse among Beijing artist Li Wei’s gravity-defying mirrored mosaic figures that protrude into the air, perfume artist Azzi Glasser’s “Rain on Earth” room that captures the scent of a city and Australian photographer Polly Borland’s colorfully quirky portraits.
We’re not overstating things by saying that meandering through space is akin to a visual arts delirium, one that awakens the senses of sight, smell, hearing and touch via the interplay of music, video, painting and performance. The juxtaposition of these mediums is done in an innovative fashion that feels deep and layered, rather than superficial or haphazard.
“Daydreaming With…” is an off-the-beaten-path cultural excursion for anyone looking to temporarily escape Hong Kong’s hustle and bustle—if only in their minds. As Lavelle himself says: “Everyone has the ability to daydream.”
ArtisTree, 1/F, Cornwall House, Tai Koo Place, 979 King's Rd., Quarry Bay. Open daily 10:30am-7pm. Free admission.
