In the former location of Nickelby’s on the, shall we say, lively strip near Carnegies, The Canny Man is the latest brainchild of Devil’s Advocate owner-operator Kevin McBarron. With the largest selection of whisky in Hong Kong - 120 malts and blends - it appeals to businessmen, sports fans and pool players. And on weekends, the amazing Scottish All Day Breakfast with 12 different items, including haggis, may even lure in families. But back to the bar: a curving 12-seater with polished oak counters, high-backed booths and a fireplace area with overstuffed chairs, comfortable leather chesterfields and low tables. It’s cozy and clubby, with an unobtrusive background soundtrack of jazz and contemporary hits. The drinks menu is grouped by price per glass, with whiskies ranging from $55 all the way up to $1,000 for the Macallan Select Reserve 1946. And there is a wide range of beers from Scotland, England and Belgium. McBarron is establishing The Canny Man’s Malt Whisky Club for serious aficionados that will include tastings and special discounts. Overall, it’s a classy new addition to the Wan Chai scene.
