  • Joyce Is Not Here Artists' Bar & Café

Why the name? It’s a reference to designer Joyce Baker, who is often away and likes to think of herself as a bird in flight. That pretension aside, this is a groovy little spot on the slowly awakening Peel Street in SoHo. Everything in the bar is for sale, the menu is a CD, the drinks are cheaper than at most bars even during happy hour, and the beer comes in possibly the coldest glasses in the city. With a huge flag setting it apart from its neighbors, Joyce is Not Here bills itself as “the second Canadian Embassy” and is one of the few places in town serving Molson Canadian beer. It regularly shows movies – mostly film festival award-winners and international art-house movies, new and old - on a 72-inch video screen and projector, which you can book for your own DVDs. During movie nights, the “mood bar” serves the house sangria and margaritas with choices of cheesecake, with two different showings on the weekends. Not surprisingly, it attracts a hip crowd of artists, musicians and modern bohemians with its fun, relaxed atmosphere.
