Five years after opening the original Agave’s in Lan Kwai Fong, Wan Chai finally gets a new Mexican option - but go for the drinks. You’re greeted by amazingly vivid red and orange décor inspired by the famous Mexican architect Luis Barragan, a Mayan-themed stone-carved wall, a long bar and a generous dining area. Tequila is really the focus here, with over 150 brands of 100 percent blue Agave tequilas imported from the blue fruit from the Tequila region of Mexico, so you’re spoiled for choice if you’re a connoisseur. We imbibed in a few fantastic margaritas to set the mood but wished the music were Mexican. The food is the real deal and many ingredients are imported, with the classic dishes of Guadalajara especially featured. While they say they are not Tex-Mex, the nachos gringos tasted like it, with a big scoop of sour cream, something Mexicans don’t usually serve. The chips seemed a bit stale and needed replacing. For the main, we tried jalapenos rellenos - deep-fried peppers stuffed with cream cheese and bacon, which weren’t actually hot, but were still good. We also tried filet of beef with chipotle, Oaxaca cheese and fresh cilantro which was fine, but lacked heat.

Best bit: The awesome margaritas
Good for: A party or after-work gathering
