We took a leisurely stroll to this little yakitori joint—another recent opening near the office—for lunch. Old-school pictures of samurai adorned the walls—along with, confusingly, a number of pictures that looked like they were taken from an American diner. We fell in love with the music at once—golden oldies by Lionel Ritchie and Billy Joel—which was as random as the American diner décor. But as it had us singing along during pauses in our conversation, we can’t complain. A quick perusal of the menu revealed offerings of skewers, skewers and more skewers of all types. We ended up going for the affordable lunch sets, which included miso soup, a drink, two skewers on the side, and a dessert. We ordered a salmon rice in Japanese tea soup set, a chicken wing set and a beef steak set. The side skewers turned out to be a Russian roulette type of deal—we were told the skewers of the day were mushroom and chicken, but we ended up with a mix of those along with deep fried tofu and cherry tomatoes wrapped in bacon (even after we had mentioned that we didn’t want any pork skewers). Our food was a mixed bag, too: we could hardly taste the salmon bits in the soup, and the chicken skewer was overcooked; while the chicken wings were tender and juicy, the beef steak flavorsome with a healthy dash of pepper, and the fried tofu delicious. Towards the end, as the resto emptied out, the waitstaff seemed to forget about us for a little bit. Overall, though, Arashigawa seems to be a nice, easy little spot if you’re in the mood for skewers.
