This tiny tapas bar with simple gray tones and mosaic-tiled bar tables is co-owned by a family of Spaniards from Barcelona. One member is chef Edgar Sanuy Barahona, who’ll be cooking away in front of patrons pretty much the whole meal. Currently, BCN (short for Barcelona, natch) has only two menus to choose from: the regular Trip to Spain—which stays unchanged on the menu—for $580; and the more seasonal Pinxtos Party for $680.

You’re supposed to order a day in advance, and we asked for the Trip to Spain (which comes with roasted suckling pig), but when we sat down, chef Edgar proceeded to prepare the Pinxtos Party menu for us instead. That was a pretty big mix-up, but we chalked it up to an administrative error. We actually ended up going gaga over the seafood-heavy $680 menu, so no grudges held there.

The dinner started off with appetite-whetting Iberico chorizo and ham with manchego cheese, followed by an olive oil-drenched salted cod cake that made us super excited about the courses to come. Following more crunchy, liquidy and indulgent bite-sized tapas was a paella rice in squid ink and served with Mediterranean red prawns. The paella was full of seafoody flavor (chef Edgar told us he mixed the prawn head’s juices right into the fragrant rice). The salted cod then made a second appearance, this time with spinach and soft romesco (Catalonian red pepper sauce).

Again, the flavors were rich and intense, going well with the fish’s firm texture. But it was the silky Iberico pork jowl and skin with garlic and olive oil foam and smoked red pepper sauce that bowled us over. Each chunk of meat was melt-in-your-mouth, and the foam was impossibly light but unbelievably tasty at the same time. The dessert of homemade chocolate truffles, while good, was modest in comparison to the mains.

Only complaint? We wish we could’ve tried a bit of that suckling pig all our neighbors were having!
