Since its start in 1990, this mall-based restaurant was so successful (perhaps, cheeky as it sounds, because you could smoke there) that it eventually evolved into eight Italian concept restaurants around town. It's just as popular as ever with those seeking casual Italian dining, a fun happy hour or a refuge from the weekend shopping hordes. In fact, it’s remained so popular that now it’s currently undergoing an extensive three-week renovation and fine-tuning of the menu, and is set to re-open Jun 20. The bright, cheerful bar smells of bread and fragrant Italian herbs. It has a cozy feel, like you’re in on some kind of secret. Perhaps that’s because all the sauces, pastas, sausages and desserts are produced exclusively in Grappa’s own kitchen, using only natural ingredients like imported semolina flour and cheeses, and there's a surprisingly extensive wine list (ranging from $200-$1,850 per bottle). The menu is a sprawling four pages and seems to cover nearly every dish that’s ever come out of Italy. The seafood dishes do well – calamari, scampi, and salmon are all good as appetizers or mains. As for pasta, the penne with grappa, cream, lobster and fresh tomatoes is almost worth the $160. The pizza is a solid choice, but not cheap, (nothing is, really; entrees go anywhere from $135 to $280). Have the tiramisu for dessert. After 15 years, it’s a good pick when you’re in Pacific Place.
