With red-and-white checkered tablecloths, intimate booths and a large stage area flanked by staircases and an upper-level bar, Grappa’s Cellar is the cosy host of the monthly Stray Katz big band and swing night, as well as guest jazz performers on most other weekends. And it’s fortunate that there was good jazz playing to take our minds off of a rather bland spinach and pine nut salad starter and a seafood soup that contained more than enough overcooked salmon chunks for our liking. To the rescue was tantalizing and prosciutto with rock melon and artichoke hearts beyond our expectations. Happily, as the band continued to do their upswing thing, our lobster and asparagus risotto arrived with a dash of flair, with the entire lobster shell surrounding the plate. Mild yet tasty, it served to offset our rather disappointing pizza experience. Ostensibly a signature pie, the pepperoni and mushroom came with an unappetizing sheen of oil, and a rather calculated two mushrooms and one pepperoni to each slice. And for the jazz aficionados? If you like Vengaboys, you'll be in heaven.
