A long, orange staircase invites you to ascend up to Himalaya, a no-nonsense Indian and Nepalese restaurant in Wan Chai. When you enter, you’ll find its walls also decorated in the same shades of warm, appetite-inducing orange. The Tibetan Buddhist Vajradhara Meditation Centre and the World Peace Café are located just across from the restaurant, and there seems to be a blanket of calm enveloping the whole street. As a result, it’s a great place to visit if you want a serene, quiet meal. Your fellow diners will mostly be workers from the area, Buddhists from across the street and random Indians and Nepalis coming up for a no-frills repast. There’s all the yummy Indian usuals: buttter chicken, paneer with spinach, daal tandoori fish and chicken, vegetarian and meat biryanis. And then there’s the lesser-known Nepalese cuisine, with their soupier daals and the smoky lamb sekuwa (marinated lamb barbecued Nepalese-style). Go for their bargainous lunch buffet to get a taste of everything, including the spectacle of Bollywood MVs playing on their big hanging screen.
