Being one out of two restaurants in the middle of an isolated beach gives you certain advantages. For one, you pretty much have a monopoly over the territory without even trying. That’s why we really appreciate the efforts of Hoi Fung Store—because they actually give a damn.

All the cha chaan teng classics like soupy instant noodles, sandwiches, fried things and deep-fried things can be found at this outdoor establishment with umbrella-topped tables. Most customers are here for a break from their scenic hikes, or are all-nighters who plan to camp on the beach before heading back the next day. We were of the former group, and, ravenous from our two-hour walk, ordered heaps of dishes and snacks family-style to share around.

The fried rices (yeung chow, veggie) and noodles (Singaporean-style vermicelli) were delectable in their savory, greasy state—paired with a spoonful of red chili oil, nobody was complaining. The sandwiches and chicken wings were less worth of mention—but if you’re just looking for tummy-fillers, they’re a safe bet. But it’s the deep-fried squid with worcester sauce that’ll have you hooked and wanting more. These delightful bite-sized pieces are as addictive as a can of Pringles—we dare you to stop at one.
