Il Caffe’s a buzzing little resto that draws in the crowds as much with its ambience as it does with its food and coffee. The tones here are brown and warm, with tables made of dark wood, nice and comfy wall-side plush seats and checker-tiled floors. Retro wallpaper and hanging photos help give the whole place that European café vibe, but on a much smaller—and louder—scale. There are pastas and sandwiches on offer, which one can purchase at the counter right by the door, and lunch sets are also available. (The place closes by 7pm latest, so dinner is out of the question.) The coffees at Il Caffe are the owner’s pride, and are made with Barbera-branded beans and processed via Elektra coffee machines and grinders. Aromatic, well-rounded and strong, they go very well on their own or with a light snack. Food-wise, the pastas are a safe bet; we ordered a plate of pappardelle bolognaise that came in wide, flat strands covered in a moderate amount of meat and sauce. All in all, the pasta was a good balance between sweet and savory, and the portion was just right—not too filling, not too measly. One thing we noticed was that it was served less than hot—had the plates been sitting in the kitchen for too long? Next time, we want to try the sandwiches.
