There’s one thing we can’t argue with—Loong Toh Yuen has an unbeatable ambience. The paper lantern-lined corridor that leads to the stone courtyard of the Hullett House really gives this Cantonese restaurant a swellegant Chinese feel, but the kitchen really needs to try a lot harder. The lunch is fine, with decent dim sum in a pretty setting, but dinner? Oops. We have no gripes about the accommodating service, but man do we have something to say about the food: a double-boiled soup that was more than $200 per head only had a sliver of fish blubber in it and was served lukewarm. What happened to all that double-boiling? The stir-fried gai laan with ginger juice was clearly not prepared by an expert hand—any Cantonese housewife could have done it better. And the molten-lava custard buns were $88 for four pieces, each slightly larger than a five-dollar coin. The presentation is not up to par either, and is incongruous with the gorgeous décor. If we’re paying that much for dinner, we’d like a bit more in the food quality department; the beautiful latticed screens and moon doors are nice, but not worth the price tag on their own.
