This tiny restaurant’s claim to being the “king of soup dumplings” is no empty boast. Almost every table has a bamboo steamer of their famous xiao long bao and many make a special pilgrimage to Quarry Bay just to sample these skilfully made packets of piping hot deliciousness. These dumplings are popular for a very good reason—the handmade skins are kneaded to an unbelievable, near-translucent thinness but still manage to remain intact without breaking when picked up with a pair of chopsticks. The soup itself has a rich, sweet flavor and we happily slurped down every last drop. The restaurant’s other Shanghainese dishes are equally fantastic, including the “squirrel fish,” deep-fried to a perfect crispy golden yellow and topped with an appetizing sweet and sour sauce, chopped scallions, mushrooms and small river shrimps.
