SoHo restaurant Yorkshire Pudding may have cornered the posh end of the British food market but Trafalgar has carved a different niche with its menu of reasonably priced and generously sized pub grub. All the comfort food classics are here, from fish and chips to steak and kidney pie. Craving something stodgy, we chose Toad in the Hole but only managed to eat half of the enormous portion, which included two bricks of Yorkshire pudding batter each baked around a top-class sausage. It was served with a mountain of creamy mash and lashings of thick, onion gravy but the peas were hard and dry. The apple crumble dessert could have fed a family of four! The crumble was subtly sweet with a cinnamon kick and the stewed apples were chunky and deliciously fruity. The Trafalgar’s much talked about “$10 pint of Magners deal” has sadly ended, but their specialty is beer, so why not try a Thomas Hardy Vintage Ale or Bishop’s Finger? There’s a lively atmosphere outside on the terrace where diners and smokers mingle and live sport (without sound) is projected on to exterior walls. Inside there are TV screens but unlike some bars in Wan Chai, Trafalgar is a foody pub with sport rather than a sports bar with food.
