Candle CapersHaving stuck my finger into many a lit table candle as a child, I’ve never really understood the appeal of dripping molten wax all over a loving partner. As I was walking to work the other day, I passed a billboard on 16 Upper Station Street that had the synapses in my brain’s beauty lobe firing with excitement. Aesop, one of my favoritest skincare brands, appears to be opening a shop in this super-trendy, up-and-coming area (HK Magazine offices were way ahead of the curve, having moved into the area oh, about 15 years ago). Can’t quite tell if the lap cheung manufacturer next-door adds or detracts from the ambience, though. It’s literally going to be one minute from my desk to the store, so those poor Aesop shop assistants will have to see me in there several times a week using up all their testers. Whither the future of their Lyndhurst Terrace flagship store, I wonder?
There’s something of a butt-toning sneakers arms race going on at the moment. The other week I was writing about Reebok’s Reetones, Sketchers’ new line is coming out next week with a big event at Langham Place, and now New Balance have joined the fray with their Truebalance line of running shoes. We all know the drill by now surely—calorie-burning sneakers, blah blah blah… Totally unearned hot ass, blah blah blah… The ones at New Balance are nice as they’re lighter and look more like proper shoes, rather than orthopedic clodhoppers. They cost between $590 and $690, depending on the model you go for—and yes, it’s worth the extra $100 if you’d rather not to get atomic wedgied in the locker room of your local gym. Here’s a bit of box-fresh news for skate fans: The 10th Hong Kong Inline Cup will be held on Nov 18-28 this year at YMCA King’s Park Centenary Centre in Jordan. Thirty teams from all over the world, including Iran, India, Korea and Brazil, will be participating in youth, high school, men’s and women’s categories.
