It takes balls to title a film “Wu Xia.” The risk that comes with naming something after a classic martial arts film genre is that, depending on the work’s quality, you will either be derided for your lack of creativity or praised for your audacity. Thankfully, the talented Peter Chan (“The Warlords”) has directed and produced a film that belongs to the latter category, for “Wu Xia” successfully and self-consciously provides a fresh take on a tried-and-tested mode of storytelling.
(Hong Kong) It is enormously refreshing to see a Hong Kong film that has nothing to do with triad politics or wired kung fu acrobatics. Set over a few streets in Wan Chai, Crossing Hennessy is a straightforward dramedy that acknowledges the pathos of modern urban living while pointing out some of the simple truths in life.
